Piet Hein Eek

Original artists are often inspired by the last thing you would expect. And that is certainly true of Dutch craftsman Piet Hein Eek.

While walking around a junkyard in his youth, Eek had the surprising realisation that old wood was more attractive than new wood. Since then he has crafted the finest, most desirable furniture from the often neglected material.

We love the idea of seeing things in a different way, so we asked Piet what his past inspirations were, and what his creative visions are for the future.

Ramón A. Olivares

Ramon A. Olivares was the main winner of our Battle of the Cities: USA challenge. Part of his prize was to have his work made into advertising in the metropolis that inspired it - New York City. The work has recently gone up and is making the streets of The Big Apple that bit more beautiful.

We spoke to him about creativity and his HUGO Create experience.

HUGO Create: Can you tell us about your history in graphic design, art and creativity?

Eike König, Founder...

If you spend five minutes on the streets of Berlin you’ll know that the city is full of artistic ideas. The urban art of the streets surrounds you and the spirit of the city takes you in.

But if you step away from the streets, and into the infrastructure of the buildings, the creativity continues to spark. Game-changing ideas are being crafted by the most forward-thinking creative agencies in the world.

Huge HUGO

We’re all into minimalism at HUGO Create, but we admit it, sometimes bigger can be better. And when we saw that one of the top ten winners of the Season’s Greetings challenge had made their entry into a bigger-than-life sized format, we were in awe.

So we got in touch with Natasha Shaloshvili, a 25 year old creative from Ukraine, who illustrated this beautiful winning artwork. She explained the process that led to super-sizing her design, and even illustrated the thought process that led her to it.

Four Stages of Creat...

Last week we bought you a HUGO Create work-in-progress. In a bid to inspire you to maximize your originality, we now want to show you how another artist worked.

We found Carmen Virginia Grisiola’s work on Behance, and loved the thought, detail and imagination that she put into her work. And how it evolved from a raw concept to a polished piece.

Four Stages of Creat...

We were exploring the creative goldmine of Twitter last week when we stumbled upon a link to Kamil Napora’s Behance page.

We instantly recognized Kamil’s sketch, an entry to the Season’s Greetings challenge that had been submitted a few days before. And we were thrilled that Kamil has published a step-by-step guide of the creative path he went down to reach his impressive entry.

Kamil’s illustration takes you through the four steps of creating a polished and unique design.

First step: Sketch a pencil drawing.

HUGO Creator - Visua...

We had over 500 eclectic visions of what an album cover should look like in our Visual Mixtape challenge. And the one we chose to represent the HUGO Create album cover was this minimalist, atmospheric and beautiful effort by Elwira Banki from the USA.

We rate each and every designer who submits to our challenges, and Elwira's work stood out as it implemented the brief by creating a perfect image for an album cover. And because Elwira's artwork captured the spirit of the brief so innovatively, we thought we could learn a thing or two by hearing about her insights and inspirations.

Rexbox

Even the most ingenious inventors have trouble keeping up with the imaginations of lively eight-year olds. Children’s minds are never-ending engines of creativity and have exhausted parents through the ages.

We only know one man who can keep up with the imagination of a child, and that’s RexBox. Rex Crowle (real name) is a professional crafter of children’s companions. He created many of the characters that became kids’ best friends in LittleBigPlanet, and is now working on LittleBigPlanet 2, due out in January 2011 for PlayStation3.
