Filippo Minelli

We fell in love with Milanese artist Filippo Minelli’s Shapes series as soon as we saw it. The juxtaposition of artificial smoke in an organic setting is equally as mysterious as it is fascinating.

So we caught up with the man who has takes his urban ideas to rural settings. We wanted to see what inspired him to make ideas that are urban by name, and urban in nature.

HUGO Create: How did you get to this stage in your artistic career?

Jessica Kerbawy

Jessica Kerbawy is an artist from the USA. We stumbled into one of her creations recently and couldn’t get enough of it.

With this work, Jessica took a set of crayons and instead of drawing with them, went at them with a hairdryer. The heat causes the crayons to run, to create a simple, yet beautifully unpredictable piece.

We spoke to Jessica about why she thinks her work catches the eye.

Ishac Bertran

It takes a special kind of creative to take one of the most beloved artistic vehicles of all time, vinyl, and not only modernize it, but make it even cooler too. But that’s what Ishac Bertran, a Barcelona-born artist who works in Copenhagen, has managed.

He recently blogged about creating music samples with vinyl records and his process amazed us.

Basically, he takes a vinyl record and cuts a section of it out with a laser:

Serge Salat

French artist Serge Salat caught our eye recently. This magnificent conceptual artist’s work would catch anyone’s eye.

His latest project, ‘Beyond Infinity’, is a bold and beautiful artwork made up of seemingly impossible architectural structures, illuminated by a wash of futuristic light.

To create this wonderful piece, Salat brought together some of the most advanced technological equipment and used it to mirror his cultural influences. We caught up with the visionary artist to discover what inspired this blend of creativity and technology.

Piet Hein Eek

Original artists are often inspired by the last thing you would expect. And that is certainly true of Dutch craftsman Piet Hein Eek.

While walking around a junkyard in his youth, Eek had the surprising realisation that old wood was more attractive than new wood. Since then he has crafted the finest, most desirable furniture from the often neglected material.

We love the idea of seeing things in a different way, so we asked Piet what his past inspirations were, and what his creative visions are for the future.

Peter Root

An urban artist HUGO Create has recently become acquainted with is Peter Root. Never one to adhere to a conventional creative process, Peter’s work often consists of unexpected ideas forming beautiful and thought-provoking works.

His work Low-Rise (pictured above), illustrates Peter's artistic style. Made entirely out of staples, this precarious work forms a city-like mosaic. And like a city, the staples are subject to the elements. The slightest breath or vibration could cause a domino effect.
